Taxes...

...so hubs and I went to get our taxes done last Friday at 5pm...yes, this was our hot date night and we were supposed to go for a 550 calorie Applebee's meal but the wait was too long so we opted for Chinese instead (which I calculated when I got home and that meal was about 550 calories too!). Anyways, we were happy with our federal return but I was PISSED about the MO return. This is the first time that either of us have ever HAD to pay like we owe them money.

Our relationship is surprisingly funny because I'm typically the OCD, bill payer on timer, write things in the calendar person in the relationship but when it comes to taxes, Matt takes the lead on that. He gathers everything, knows what we're missing, sets the appointment and asks all the questions when we meet with the accountant. So during our meeting, I listen but I let Matt do all the talking, that is until I find out we OWE!?! Then I pipe up (keep in mind I have NO IDEA about this sort of stuff, Jess I know you're reading this so please leave a comment), "I don't understand. I know that I claim zero for everything so if I'm not withholding anything how do I end up owing?" He tried to explain it to me and told us the only way to get around owing would be to have extra money withheld from our checks. Okay, as stated above, I have no idea how this works but if the government is already taken out the most money they can out of my check then I still don't understand how the hell I have to pay them MORE money!!! After he explained it to me, I leaned over to Matt and said, "Well, that pisses me off." I though I only said it to Matt but then the accountant said, "Well, I'm sorry." LOL! I wasn't taking it out on him but it really pissed me off!!!

The guy also kept saying looks like you're getting close to getting that house paid off which he said more than once, the second time he said it, I looked at me then him and said, "I don't think owing $XX,000 is ALMOST paid off."

Anyways, so I'm letting it go about the MO taxes and just going to enjoy the fed return which will be used for the new truck...can't wait to post about that (but we haven't even started looking). OH! I'm going to update on the poison tomorrow and post pics so I'm just warning you all now!!! Happy Monday!

My best friend lives in MO and she said that she's heard people ALWAYS have to pay state taxes! What a bummer. :(

You sound SO much like me with the money thing. I can't keep my mouth shut when things cost more than I think they should or if I dont' get back money I think I'm owed. If I had a dollar for every time I said "that pisses me off" or "that's stupid" or "that CANNOT be right", I wouldn't have to worry about money!

I hate taxes. Chad and I have owed both State and Federal for the past two years. I adjusted our withholdings for this year, but I'm still scared to now the final numbers...

we always owe a little bit on MO too. We always get money back from Fed so we just use some of that to pay MO. I live in the City so I also have to pay 1 percent of all my money to the city too!

Ugh, I feel your pain! I have ALWAYS gotten a refund. This year, it didn't really sink in that I married a "self-employed" man, who can only call himself such because he's 1099-ed instead of W-2ed. We owe the government so much money it's not even funny! No, really, I cried for like 3 hours straight!

sorry about your taxes! we always owe. But how awesome about your truck! we bought our truck brand new in 2006 and we love it!

The hubs and I are exactly the same way - I do bills ALL year round, but he takes care of taxes. But he does them himself, which always impresses me. This is also the first year we will NOT be getting money back from taxes - SUCKS.

Can't wait to see your new truck though.

We always get a big federal refund but owe state taxes. It doesn't make any sense.

The part about having extra withheld from checks if both people are working ticks me off too. An accountant once told me that claiming zero was really intended for only one person in a marriage working full time. Still, it sucks. I cannot BELIEVE how much we paid in taxes and how little we will get back in comparison!

Yeah, I got diddly-squat back from my taxes, being a dependent college student. Even though I paid tuition/books myself, I couldn't use it because I was a dependent. BOO!

I'm not very happy with the government right now. ;)

Taxes blah. I hear that about the State--they get us for additional every year.

I thought I was doing well until we received a notice on an unpaid local tax. After several calls, I learned that we reside in a dual tax zone for the local district. Now, I get to fill out missing returns for the last few years and back pay to them--even though we moved from out of state and had idea about the dual tax.

As I started, taxes blah...

I do all the bills and taxes. My hubby steps in and tries to take the lead but has no clue. Lol. Owing sucks. I am like you. I claim ZERO for a reason. I don't want to pay. Take my money now. I don't like surprises.

The only thing that saved us was the rental house (my old house) - we have lots of deductions from that. In fact I'm pretty sure that if we didn't have the rental house we prob would have owed state too. I heard once you start having kids it gets better. Maybe that will be some motivation for you and Mattie ;)
